What is reiki?

Reiki is a healing modality developed by Dr. Matsuo Usui in 1922 during a meditative experience on Mt Kurama. He was inspired to use it to help others and then set up a Reiki clinic and then a Reiki healing art society. Through time he developed more techniques to facilitate its use. He trained 20 teachers, and from that time reiki has been passed from teacher to student. Some other research has shown that reiki began before Dr. Usui. While there are different threads of historical connection to early Buddhism that have been advanced, beyond a doubt Dr. Usui was strongly influenced by Tendai Buddhism. His meditative experience happened during a retreat at a Tendai temple, the reiki symbols are based on Tendai seed syllables, and the Reiki attunement process mirrors a Tendai purification ritual called go shimbô that is also known as Dharma for Protecting the Body. Ji Hyang is honored to include Reiki among the Buddhist healing arts practiced here. However, one does not need to be Buddhist in order to benefit from reiki, or in order to receive a reiki attunement.

A Reiki treatment is a practice of allowing reiki energy to flow through us to renew and heal another person, in response to the needs of their body, mind, and spirit.   This can be done through noninvasive gentle touch or without touch.  Reiki has been shown in rigorous research to reduce pain, relieve anxiety and depression, and balance the mind and body according to the system’s needs. Reiki healing can work on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.

The ability to practice reiki is conferred through an “attunement” process. To enroll in a reiki class and receive attunements, please contact Dr. Ji Hyang.
